Itching

About 26% of women will experience itching with epidural anesthesia21. It can be treated, but even after treatment, some women still feel itchy.

Shivering (The “shakes”)

Thirty one percent of women experience episodes of shivering when they have an epidural. About 10% of women shiver when they have natural labor[22]. We don’t know if it’s hormones, stress, or some other mechanism that causes shivering, but shivering at some point during labor is common.

Fever

About 24% of women experience fever with epidural anesthesia21. This risk appears to be higher for first-time moms who have long labors.

Some studies say that it’s the risk of uterine infection that long labors present that contributes to the development of fever. Longer labors often mean your bag of water has been broken a long time, and that you’ve had more exams. The longer your bag is broken the greater the risk of infection and fever.

Less than 1% of babies actually have an infection even though many are evaluated22.
